He is an ardent outdoorsman and accomplished horseman. Mr. Dyar is a US National Champion Marksman and a US National Polocrosse champion, competing in Australia in 1992.

In 1997, Barry began exploring the world of elk ranching. He recognized the seriousness of Chronic Wasting Disease and began searching for solutions. In 2002, with the help of friends and professionals, the Elk Research Institute was formed to develop and promote a rare genotype of elk showing resistance to CWD.

ERI Scientific Director - Dr. William C. (Bill) Hobson, Ph.D, - Bill grew up on a working cattle ranch on the front range of Colorado. He received a B.S. in Animal Science from Colorado State University and a Ph.D in physiology and endocrinology from Cornell University. He is author of a number of book chapters and more than 90 research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals. During his research career he played key roles in development of the first drugs for treatment of AIDS and in development of vaccines for Hepatitis A, B and C. He is an avid outdoorsman and is deeply concerned both about the potentially disastrous consequences of CWD for the nation's elk and deer herds, and about the ever-increasing potential for spread of prion disease from wildlife to domestic animals.
